Nils Lofgren: Hanging Tough

Nils Lofgren, Hanging Tough  Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 4 out of 5.  I was pleased to find a copy of the 2013 release of this October 1977 show of Nils Lofgren and his band at the Bottom Line in New York.

The show occurred shortly after the release of the I Came to Dance album.  It was supposed to be the breakthrough album after a terrific debut album and the solid Cry Tough.  It did not sell as well and many fans thought Nils had abandoned his virtuoso punk persona in favor of a more mainstream and less edgy sound.  The record was followed by a poorly received live album and the terrific Nils.  One wonders if Lofgren might have become a star if Nils had followed Cry Tough.

This recording demonstrates Lofgren’s terrific playing and some of his greatest songs with a ballsy band.  Lofgren, in my view, is one of the USA’s best guitar player and here he is in a fine live performance at the top of his solo career.
